Summer’s Hot! Doma’s Tuesday Night Music Series Continues!

I just wanted to make sure you don’t miss the Doma music series while it is in full summer effect and to let you know some of its upcoming offerings.

Back in March, my friends at Doma, a café restaurant on Perry St. in Greenwich Village, decided to have music once a week and asked me to help curate a Tuesday series. Drawing from the Jazz and Songwriting worlds I am involved with, I’ve been choosing players and singers that I have collaborated with for years, as well as burgeoning musical talent. Geographically centered in a thriving musical neighborhood, the series stands out for its musical diversity and has quickly become a standing room only scene.

When I think about it, the amount of artistry that has come through since March has been astounding. Although the names on the line up are not yet household names, these players have backed a vast array of stars such as Liza Minelli, Beck, Norah Jones, Paul Motian, Tegan and Sara, Lounge Lizards, Jack Dejohnette, Sheryl Crow, John Zorn, Levon Helm, John Scofield, Jack White, Ani Difranco and more.

The series has shaped into a great success musically, socially, and gastronomically.

Doma’s Tuesday night music series turns up the heat for the summer.  We've got Jerome Harris crooning and strumming August 16, Bop on Pop Frank Perowsky filling the house on August 23, and Michael Polesny with world class musicians -- keyboardist Pete Drungle and drummer Ben Perowsky on August 30.  Drummer and curator Ben Perowsky will be in attendance almost weekly.

Jazzophiles have been getting to Doma even earlier these days, taking advantage of Doma’s Happy Hour from 5 - 7 ($3 beer, $4 wine, and a half sandwich for just $4 more or mussels and beer for ten bucks) -- and to make sure to get a choice seat.  The place usually fills to standing room only by the end of the first set, full of Villagers in the know and tourists who can’t believe the luck they had in stumbling across the cool little boite at the corner of Seventh and Perry.

It’s starting to get hard to get a seat at Doma on Tuesday nights.  The series is curated by world-famous drummer Ben Perowsky, whose rolodex allows him to people a rather unassuming café/restaurant with some rather staggeringly good players. Word must have got out that music this good could be had for no cover (but a $10 minimum); and there’s just something usually so unattainably Village about looking out of those giant windows at the cabs on Seventh Ave while drinking a beer or a glass of wine and listening to some of the best music NYC has to offer.

Each month since March, every Tuesday, the best of the best in NYC’s music scene has been testing and expressing their verbosity within the contexts of more traditional mediums.  These almost song-book contexts include gypsy jazz and reinterpretation of standards -- contemporary expressions of traditional folkloric mediums, but not limited to American folklore.   Sometimes guests are sometimes also treated to surprise visits from compatriots playing at nearby Village Vanguard, Smalls and Blue Note.

Doma’s owner, Michael Polesny, a musician and songwriter best known for his heady pop project, Stoneboat, collaborates with curator and world-famous drummer Ben Perowsky to produce the series.  Perowsky is one of the most accomplished drummers of his generation, part of a small vanguard of players able to move between jazz, experimental music and cutting edge pop and rock.  His numerous drumming credits and collaborations make him a curator with the mostess, able to gather some incredible talent for this exciting series.  And Perowsky’s many fans have been more than happy to find out that he is also the drummer for almost all sets.  

Doma, known literally around the world as one of New York’s City’s most beloved boites for food, coffee, wine, beer and true Village vibe, haunt of writers, artists, musicians and just plain folks, seals its status as the Center of True Village with this Tuesday night jazz series.   And as if the jazz luminaries were not Pied Piper enough, Doma’s combination of great comfort food, great wines and beers at good prices, and espresso drinks pulled by an impressive selection of mesmerizingly un-American baristas should seal the deal.  Jazz-lovers can go the wine-and-cheese or coffee-and-dessert route, try light fare such as Panini and salads or a plate of mussels; or dig in to sit-down dinner options that include Chicken with Lemon and Capers, burger and fries, Seared Salmon, pasta dishes, and a wide array of sandwiches and salads.   The wine list is considered a best-kept secret in the Village, with fine European wines at low prices, and a beer list featuring Belgian blond ales, wheat beer, rare and less so lagers from both Germany masters and Brooklyn microbreweries.
